# MCP Overview

> Connect Tandem to Claude, Cursor, and other AI agents via the Model Context Protocol.

The Tandem MCP server lets AI assistants — Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and any other MCP-compatible client — read and manage your tasks directly. Instead of copy-pasting tasks into a chat, your agent can create, update, and complete Tandem tasks natively.

## Installation

Install the MCP server globally from npm:

```bash theme={null}
npm install -g @telltandem/mcp
```

## Getting your API token

1. Open Tandem and go to **Settings → API**
2. Generate a new token and copy it

## Configuring Claude Code

Add the server to your Claude Code MCP config (usually `~/.claude/mcp.json` or via `claude mcp add`):

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tandem": {
      "command": "tandem-mcp",
      "env": {
        "TANDEM_API_TOKEN": "your-token-here"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

Or use the CLI shortcut:

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add tandem -- tandem-mcp --token your-token-here
```

## Configuring Claude Desktop

Open your Claude Desktop config file:

* **macOS:** `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json`
* **Windows:** `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json`

Add the Tandem server:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tandem": {
      "command": "tandem-mcp",
      "env": {
        "TANDEM_API_TOKEN": "your-token-here"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

Restart Claude Desktop to pick up the change.

## Configuring Cursor

In Cursor, go to **Settings → MCP** and add:

```json theme={null}
{
  "tandem": {
    "command": "tandem-mcp",
    "env": {
      "TANDEM_API_TOKEN": "your-token-here"
    }
  }
}
```

## Available tools

Once connected, your AI agent can use:

| Tool | Description |
| - | - |
| `list_tasks` | Fetch your task list with optional filters |
| `get_task` | Get a single task by ID |
| `create_task` | Create a task with title, project, category, and priority |
