What is an initiative?

An initiative is the highest level of organization in Tandem. Use initiatives to group related projects and tasks under a single goal or long-running theme — things like “Q3 product launch,” “home renovation,” or “career transition.” The hierarchy is:
Initiatives nest: an initiative can have sub-initiatives if you need more structure.

Creating an initiative

Click Initiatives in the navigation. From the initiatives list, click New initiative and give it a name. You can also create one inline when assigning a task — just type a new initiative name in the initiative field.

Assigning tasks to an initiative

Open any task and set its initiative from the initiative field. Tasks can belong to both an initiative and a project simultaneously.

Viewing progress

From the initiatives list, each initiative shows:
  • Total tasks vs. completed tasks
  • A cumulative flow chart — tasks created vs. tasks completed over time — so you can see whether work is getting done as fast as it’s being added
Click an initiative to drill into its sub-initiatives, projects, and tasks.

Sub-initiatives

You can nest initiatives under other initiatives. For example:
Sub-initiatives appear indented under their parent on the initiatives list page.

Archiving an initiative

Archiving hides an initiative and all its tasks from your active views. Archived initiatives and their tasks can be restored at any time from Settings → Initiatives.

Merging initiatives

If two initiatives turn out to be the same effort, you can merge one into another from the initiative detail page. All tasks from the merged initiative move to the target initiative.
